COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
COVER, IRONING BOARD
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this Commercial Item Description in preference to Type IV, Classes A and B of Federal Specification RR-I-660.
This commercial item description (CID) covers two classes of household ironing board covers.
Class A- Cotton sheeting, plain or sized
Class B- Cotton sheeting, Teflon treated or silicon-aluminum coated.
Salient characteristics:
The coverssha11 be made from unbleached 100 percent cotton sheeting or drill cloth of one piece construction. The cotton shall be identified by the ASTM D 276, Standard Methods for Identification of Fibers in Textiles, latest revision.
The class A cotton sheeting shall have a minimum yarn count of 48 x 44 and weigh a minimum of 3.5 ounces per square yard before sizing.
The class B cotton sheeting shall have a minimum yarn count of 44 x 40 and weigh a minimum of 2.5 ounces per square yard before Teflon treatment or silicon-aluminum coating. The finished cover shall show no pin holes when held up to a bright light.
The covers shall fit standard household type ironing boards from 52-1/2 inches ling x 13 inches wide to 54-1/2 inches long x 15 inches wide. The covers shall be a tapered envelope type, and the taper shall start 36 inches + 1 inch from the wide end and tapering toward the narrow end. The edges of the cover shall have one of the following means of holding the cover on the ironing board:
(1) a tie cord extending the entire distance around the cover with a 3/8 inch minimum width tie cord hem or binding sewn to the cover. The hem or binding shall have an opening at either end for extending the ends of tie cord. The cord shall extend a minimum of 4 inches beyond the opening;
(2) tie tapes not less than 16-1/2 inches long sewn into the hem, one at each side of the cover, 24 to 28 inches from each end;
(3) An elastic binding extending the entire distance around the cover with a 3/8 inch minimum width hem or binding sewn to the corner.
