HANDCART, GROCERY, HANDICAPPED
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this commercial item description.
1. CLASSIFICATION.
1.1 Classification. This commercial item description covers one type and size of grocery handcart for handicapped persons.
2. SALIENT CHARACTERISTICS.
2.1 Design and construction. The handcart shall be designed for use by a wheelchair bound patron. The handcart shall be equipped with a detachable metal bar that shall have provisions for fastening handcart to the arm of the wheelchair. The bar shall be minimum of 30 inches long and feature an adjustable clamp to accommodate the patron at varying distances from the front of the wheelchair. The bar shall be designed to be conveniently stored inside the handcart basket when not in use to save on storage space. The handcart frame shall be constructed of heavy gauge tubular steel with an attached, nonremovable, upper, close-mesh, heavy gauge wire basket. The handcart shall be nickel-chrome plated with baked on acrylic coating. The basket shall be reinforced with a minimum of four horizontal bands of heavy gauge steel wire, shall have a raised edge on the side facing the patron to prevent merchandise from falling out, and shall have a minimum capacity of 5,500 cubic inches. The handcart shall have a lower grill type tray for storing a purse or fragile or bulky items.
