3.1.1 Ironing board performance. The ironing board shall be rigid, stable, free of wobble, and capable of supporting a 50 pound (22.7 kg) weight placed in the center of the board within a bearing area of not more than 64 square inches (412.9 sq cm) for three times. The ironing board shall support the specified weight without a permanent deflection in the top of the surface and shall maintain all height positions.
3.2 Ironing board pad. The ironing board pad shall fit the ironing board described in this CID (see 3.1 and figure 1) and shall have the following characteristics.
A. The pad shall cover the entire ironing surface if the ironing board.
B. The pad shall be cut in one piece.
C. A separate nose piece, wide enough to securely hold the end of the pad to the end of the ironing board, shall be sewn to the tapered end of the pad.
D. The pad shall be an assembly of a top and a bottom layer of interlocked synthetic and natural fibers with a natural or synthetic foam rubber core or shall be a combination of interlocked synthetic and natural fibers without a core. The pad shall be 1/4 inch (0.6 cm) thick minimum, and shall weigh 14 oz/sq yd (466.7 g/sq m), minimum.
E. At the manufacturer’s option, the pad may have a natural or synthetic foam rubber backing.
F. The entire perimeter of the pad shall be finished with binding tape or overedge stitching. The edge finish shall be sewn through all component layers of the pad.
3.3 Ironing board cover. The ironing board cover shall fit the ironing board described in this CID (see 3.1 and Figure 1) and shall have the following characteristics.
A. The cover shall be large enough to be securely fitted over the ironing board top with the pad in place.
B. The cover shall be unbleached, sized, or unsized, 100 percent cotton sheeting or drill (see 3.3.1 and 3.3.2)
C. The covers shall be coated or uncoated as specified (see 2.1, 3.3.1, 3.3.2, and 7.2)
D. The cover shall be cut in one piece. A separate nose piece may be attached at the tapered end of the cover, at the manufacturer’s option.
E. The edges of the cover shall be finished with a hem or binding and shall have one of the following means of holding the cover on the ironing board. Additional tie tapes may be furnished, at the option of the manufacturer.
a) Drawstring method. A drawstring, encased in an edge hem or binding, shall extend around the entire perimeter of the cover. The drawstring shall extend a minimum of 4 inches (10.2 cm) beyond the opening at each end of the hem or binding. The drawstring shall be durable enough and strong enough to hold the cover and pad to the ironing board under normal use.
b) Elasic method. An elastic binding shall be securely sewn around the entire perimeter of the cover. The elastic binding shall be durable enough and strong enough to hold the cover and pad to the ironing board under normal use.
